I Corinthians 14:1-25

1. Prophesy and tongues.

  • To speak in tongues is speaking to God and edifies the speaker. I Cor. 14:2,4
  • To prophesy is to speak to other people and such speech edifies the church. I Cor. 14:3,4
  • To speak in tongues is good but to prophesy is even better. I Cor. 14:5

2. A prayer language.

  • To pray in a tongue leaves the mind free, but it engages the spirit. I Cor. 14:14
  • Paul prayed with his mind and with his spirit. I Cor. 14:15

3. Seek gifts that will build up the church.

  • But in the church Paul would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. I Cor. 14:19
  • Prophesying brings people to an awareness of God. 14:24,25
  • Let us follow the way of love. I Cor. 14:1
